Accessibility

The short version: everyone should be able to read our menu, order ahead and find our door. We built this site to the recognised standard for that, and we test it. If something here gets in your way, call us and tell us.

What we’re aiming for

We build to WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the international standard most accessibility rules point to. We aim to meet it. We won’t claim we’ve met every part of it perfectly, because nobody honestly can.

What that means in practice

  • You can use the whole site with a keyboard. A “Skip to content” link appears when you start tabbing, so you can jump past the opening film straight to the page.
  • It works with screen readers. Every page has proper headings and landmarks, the opening film carries a written description, and every menu photo is labelled with the drink or pastry it shows.
  • Text is readable. Our text colours are measured against the AA contrast standard on the finished pages, including the words that sit over the film.
  • Links and buttons are easy to tap. They’re checked against the 24-pixel minimum size.
  • If you’ve asked your device for reduced motion, the site listens. The opening film becomes a single still picture, and fades and transitions switch off.
  • It works without JavaScript. Turn it off and every page still shows its words: the menu and prices, our address, phone number and hours. Ordering ahead does need it, because that page is SpotOn’s.
  • You can zoom in. The layout reflows down to a phone’s width, so text isn’t cut off when you zoom.

What we know isn’t perfect

  • The opening film. Our home page opens with a scrolling film, from the coffee cherry to our café. It’s decoration, not information: it carries a written description for screen readers, it becomes one still picture if you’ve asked for reduced motion, and the skip link jumps past it.
  • Our checks are automated. They catch a lot, but not everything a person using a screen reader or a switch would notice. That’s why the phone number below matters.
  • The ordering page and the map aren’t ours. Ordering ahead happens on SpotOn’s ordering page, shown inside our site, and our location pages show a Google map. We can’t fix those companies’ accessibility. If either one gets in your way, call the café and we’ll help you another way.

Tell us if something doesn’t work

If any part of this site stops you getting what you came for, call us at (248) 710-3080. Tell us which page you were on and what happened. We’ll help you there and then, and we’ll get the page fixed.

In the café

This page is about the website. If you have a question about getting into or around the café itself, please call. It’s the fastest way to a real answer from someone standing in the room.
